With flour and gas prices hitting record highs, bakers have held bread and naan prices temporarily, warning of price hikes after Eid.
The Pakistan Non-Bakers Association has announced that the prices of bread and naan will remain unchanged until the 30th of Ramzan.
According to the association, it has been decided that the current prices of roti and naan will remain unchanged until Ramzan 30 to provide temporary relief to the public despite the rising costs.
The announcement came after a meeting of the association’s General Council.
It was attended by representatives from Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Murree, Talagang, and the neighbouring areas, according to the sources.
The meeting was chaired by the association’s central president, Shafiq Qureshi, reports added.
According to the association, continuous increases in the prices of flour, ghee, LPG, electricity, labour, and tandoor rents have placed immense pressure on the naan makers.
They further noted that the cost of commercial gas cylinders has risen to Rs 16,000.
This is while other expenses continue to climb daily. This makes it increasingly difficult to maintain current prices.
The association also warned that after Eid ul Fitr, the price of bread and naan is expected to increase by Rs 5.
While parathas and roghni naan (oily naan) could become Rs 10 more expensive.
They further cautioned that if raw material prices remain uncontrolled, several tandoors could be forced to shut down.
According to the data, the price of a 79 kg bag of flour has risen from Rs 7,600 to Rs 11,700.
Additionally, a bag of maida has jumped from Rs 8,200 to Rs 12,600.
