Britney Spears has been arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence.
A spokesperson for her remarked, “This was an unfortunate incident that is entirely inexcusable.”
She was released in the early hours of Thursday and is scheduled to appear at the Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.
Spears’ representative stated, “Britney is committed to taking the appropriate steps and adhering to the law, and we hope this can mark the beginning of a long-overdue transformation in Britney’s life.”
“We are optimistic that she can receive the assistance and support she requires during this challenging period. “Her children will be spending time with her. Her family will devise a much-needed plan to ensure her success and well-being”, he added.
The pop star seemed to have deleted her Instagram account on Thursday as news of her arrest emerged.
Britney Spears announces break from music industry
Spears is recognized as one of the most successful pop artists in history, with chart-topping hits including Baby One More Time, Toxic, Everytime, Gimme More, Womanizer, and Stronger.
In January 2024, the singer announced that she would “never return to the music industry.” Her most recent song was a collaboration with Elton John in 2022.
Nevertheless, in a social media post that has since been removed, Spears suggested that while she would not perform in the United States again, she was looking forward to the possibility of performing live in the UK and Australia in the near future.
This is not the first instance of Spears encountering legal troubles.
Britney Spears arrested for hit-and-run
In 2007, Britney Spears was arrested for a misdemeanor hit-and-run, which were ultimately dismissed after she compensated for the damages.
The subsequent year, she underwent hospitalisation for a psychiatric assessment.
Her father, Jamie Spears, was then awarded what began as a temporary conservatorship over her financial assets.
This conservatorship was later prolonged and persisted for 13 years, leading fans to initiate a “Free Britney” campaign aimed at its termination.
It was concluded in 2021, and since that time, Spears has primarily been visible through her social media posts, frequently sharing videos of herself dancing on Instagram. Her account was inaccessible on Thursday.
