Jasprit Bumrah Faces Backlash After Stump Mic Records Body Shaming Comment on Temba Bavuma

Temba Bavuma and his team winning ICC Test Championship

A controversy erupted on the first day of the Kolkata Test between India and South Africa after a stump microphone caught Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah making a body-shaming remark about South African captain Temba Bavuma.

The incident occurred when Bumrah was bowling his 13th over and he appealed for Temba’s LBW.

After the umpire rejected the appeal, Bumrah discussed taking a review with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. During this conversation, Bumrah was heard joking about Bavuma’s height, saying “Bauna bhi to hai ye”, a Hindi phrase meaning “he is short.”

The audio from stump mic rapidly shared by the users on social media sparking widespread criticism on his racist remarks.

Bavuma after taking a long break from the test cricket, he was not the part of the team who played against Pakistan in 2 Test matches, recently.

He managed only 3 runs off 11 balls before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav. His early wicket left South Africa at 71 for 3 and under pressure.

The team never recovered and was bowled out for 159 in 55 overs.

Possible ICC Action

Cricket experts say Bumrah’s remarks may fall under Level 1 violations of the ICC Code of Conduct (Article 2.1.4), which covers the use of “inappropriate or offensive language.”

If found guilty he could receive a reprimand, a fine, or 1–2 demerit points.

In more serious cases, penalties can move to Level 2 which may include a 50–100% match fee fine or even a suspension for up to two matches.

The ICC has not yet announced whether it will take formal action.

Bumrah already has one demerit point from the Asia Cup 2025 final. Most important fact is accumulating four points within 24 months can result in suspension of Indian pacer.

Officials are expected to review the audio and decide whether the comments were personal or simply about ball height and bounce.
