Canada to hit US With retaliatory tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Saturday that Canada will impose new retaliatory tariffs on US goods from September 8, just hours after the United States introduced 50% tariffs on Canadian products.

Speaking in Ottawa, Carney said Canada would announce details of the new measures in the coming days. He had earlier warned that Canada could respond with “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs.

The new US tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa broke down on Friday.

The US has imposed tariffs on around $28 billion worth of Canadian imports, including beer, liquor, cheese, electronics, lumber, building materials and auto parts. The measures are expected to increase prices for American consumers and raise costs for US manufacturers.

Carney said the United States had “asked too much and offered too little”, adding that Canada could not accept Washington’s demands.

The latest measures have increased tensions between the two countries and could particularly affect Michigan, where Canada remains the state’s largest export market.

Canadian provinces had already removed US liquor products from store shelves in March 2025 after the US imposed tariffs on Canadian goods.
