Cape Verde’s footballers received a heroic welcome back home following their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 exit after pushing Argentina to the limit in a thrilling contest.

The team exceeded all expectations throughout the tournament, winning the hearts of millions with their fearless performances.

Despite their elimination, they gave the world champions a tough fight and left the tournament with their heads held high.

Goalkeeper Vozinha, who became famous overnight with his skills, said, “It is a very great moment for us to be here with our people.”

The goalkeeper rose to global fame after stopping almost seven crucial saves against tournament favourites Spain, helping his side secure a remarkable 0-0 draw. His heroic display quickly made him a fan favourite, and his popularity has skyrocketed ever since. In just a few weeks, Vozinha has gained more than 20 million followers on Instagram.

During their Round of 32 clash against Argentina, Cape Verde produced a spirited performance, twice coming from behind to level the score. However, Argentina’s late winner sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory, bringing Cape Verde’s impressive FIFA World Cup campaign to an end.

Despite defeat, Cape Verde manager Pedro Leitão Brito, also known as Bubista, was proud of a team which came within 10 minutes of forcing Argentina into a penalty shootout.

“We showed that we may be a small country, but we can play against the best teams in the world,” he said.

He added, “We made history for our country. They can be proud to represent our country.”
