The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has planned to install dedicated bike lanes and pedestrian pathways across the city.

The decision is a part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure and public spaces.

The initiative was approved during a high-level meeting, chaired by the CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner, Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

CDA focuses on safer travel options

Officials say the new bike lanes will be developed alongside existing footpaths in different sectors, while pedestrian-friendly pathways will be introduced in major commercial areas.

The aim is to make walking and cycling safer and more practical and safer for residents, particularly in busy parts of the city.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing work in residential areas and commercial centres. Plans include repairing parking areas, widening footpaths and improving smaller shopping centres.

Authorities say these upgrades are meant to bring older parts of the city in line with current urban standards.

Encroachment crackdown continues

Alongside development work, the CDA has also ordered to continue its crackdown against illegal encroachments.

Officials have been directed to remove unauthorised structures from both residential and commercial areas.

The move is intended to clear public spaces and improve access on roads and sidewalks.

Other measures discussed include better road signboards, clearer lane markings and the expansion of digital parking systems to manage traffic more effectively.

Work is also planned to repair damaged manholes, kerbstones and drainage systems, which have been a concern in several neighbourhoods.

Other major decisions by CDA

The project is intended to support non-motorised transport, which includes cycling and walking.

City planners say this could help reduce pressure on roads and provide a practical alternative to using cars.

Dedicated lanes are expected to separate cyclists and pedestrians from regular traffic, which may improve safety in busy areas.

The CDA chairman also called for improved sanitation and regular maintenance work, including landscaping and horticulture.

Entry points to the capital are set to be upgraded as part of efforts to maintain Islamabad’s image as a clean and well-planned city.

Officials say timelines and quality standards will be closely monitored as the projects move forward.
