OpenAI to Relax ChatGPT Restrictions, Promises More Human-Like Experience

Web desk: OpenAI has announced plans to ease restrictions on ChatGPT, aiming to make the chatbot more natural, expressive, and enjoyable to use.

Sam Altman, who has been the CEO of OpenAI since 2019, announced on X that the company plans to ease restrictions on ChatGPT.

He said the changes aim to make the chatbot more natural, expressive, and enjoyable for users while maintaining safety.

Altman wrote, “We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realise this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue, we wanted to get this right.”

The company said earlier limits were put in place to ensure safety, especially around sensitive mental health issues.

However, after introducing new safety tools and systems, OpenAI now feels confident it can relax many of those restrictions without compromising user well-being.

ChatGPT Human-Like Experience

A new version of ChatGPT will allow users to choose personalities that feel more human-like. It’s expected to launch in the coming weeks. This would be similar to the popular GPT-4 model.

Users will be able to decide whether they want ChatGPT to sound more friendly, emotional, or expressive, including using emojis and conversational tones.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, posted, “In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).”

OpenAI emphasised that these changes will only apply if users choose them. Adding the company is not trying to “maximise usage,” but rather to offer more personalisation.

ChatGPT’s “treat adult users like adults” principle

In December, OpenAI will also expand its age verification system as part of its “treat adult users like adults” approach.

Altman stated, “In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”

With this update, verified adult users will gain access to additional content options, including erotica.

The company said these updates mark a shift towards giving users more control over how ChatGPT behaves. While keeping strong safeguards in place.
