Web desk: Three Chinese nationals arrested for allegedly filming and assaulting women in a slum area of Islamabad were released from jail after the complainant withdrew the case following a settlement on Wednesday.
A video of the incident in Golra went viral two days earlier, prompting police to register a case at Golra Police Station and take the suspects into custody.
However, all three were freed once both sides reached an out-of-court agreement.
Chinese nationals
The FIR was filed on December 8 by Muhammad Khan, who said his family and other members of his tribe were temporarily living in makeshift huts near Chor Chowk in Golra.
He stated that seven Chinese nationals arrived at the location on December 7 and began recording videos of the women in the settlement.
According to the FIR, the residents repeatedly asked them to stop filming, but the visitors continued, leading to a confrontation.
Muhammad Khan alleged that the Chinese nationals assaulted the men in his family and beat some of the women with sticks.
Physical remand
Assistant Sub-Inspector Sarfaraz Ahmed told BBC Urdu that police had obtained a two-day physical remand for the arrested men. After which, the court sent them to jail on judicial remand.
However, Muhammad Khan informed the court that he had reached a settlement and no longer wished to pursue the case.
As a result, the court ordered the release of the three Chinese nationals.
Khan said he did not seek any compensation, even for damage caused to motorbikes, and withdrew the case because he did not want visiting foreigners to feel mistreated in Pakistan.
ASI Sarfaraz Ahmed said he was unaware of the settlement until the complainant informed the court.
He added that although the investigation had only just begun, the complainant has the legal right to withdraw the case at any stage by submitting an affidavit.
