Contractors held accountable for damaging college infrastructure in Sindh

The Sindh College Education Department has announced strict measures against contractors and engineers responsible for damaging the infrastructure of colleges across the province.

In a meeting chaired by Secretary of College Education, Nadeem-ur-Rehman Memon, it was decided that those endangering human lives through poor construction practices and the use of substandard materials will face strict action.  Contractors and responsible officers will be blacklisted, inquiries will be conducted, and severe punishment will be imposed.

The meeting also addressed absenteeism among staff, revealing that 36 female and 44 male teachers and employees have been absent for extended periods. Legal action will be initiated against these officers and teachers, with cases forwarded to the Chief Secretary and public notices to be issued in newspapers.

To improve oversight, the government will establish an independent Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate by merging the existing Monitoring and Inspection Wing. The directorate will carry out strict monitoring of teachers’ and students’ attendance, college infrastructure and the quality of education.

Secretary Nadeem Memon also directed officials to prepare a comprehensive concept paper for a College’s Infrastructure Development Unit, with all development schemes to be executed through consultant firms. Additionally, consultants will be appointed through national and international tendering processes.

The meeting further decided that college principals will be appointed on time, and a career counselling program will be launched for students.

The services of education experts, bureaucrats, and professionals will be sought to guide students.
It was emphasised that no negligence will be tolerated in the implementation of policies in the College Education Department. Secretary Nadeem Memon said that the quality of education in the province will be improved by strengthening the monitoring system. A notification will also be issued to ban the unnecessary use of mobile phones in colleges. He directed all officers to fulfil their responsibilities, warning that failure to do so would result in indiscriminate action.
