In a major step towards improving transparency and helping to curb scams, Punjab’s courts have introduced a mandatory biometric verification system to prevent fake cases, bogus bail, and the use of false identities, effective from today.
According to media reports, the implementation of the project began following the formal approval of Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court, Justice Ms Aalia Neelum.
Under the issued notification, biometric verification of parties has been made mandatory in all courts across Punjab before any judicial proceedings can take place.
NADRA based biometric verification system
It has been clearly stated in the notification that the petitioners, respondents, and guarantors must undergo biometric verification in accordance with NADRA records.
Without the biometric verification being done, no petition can be filed.
Additionally, no bail or any other judicial relief will be considered without the biometric verification.
The new system will apply to both criminal and civil cases.
The judicial officials noted that in the past, practices like fake identities and bogus guarantors, and frivolous cases wasted the valuable time of the court.
Such practices also raised serious questions about the integrity of the justice process.
They believe that the introduction of the biometric system will effectively prevent such practices.
According to officials, biometric verification will ensure accurate identification of the actual parties, timely appearance in court, and effective implementation of judicial orders.
In addition to this, it will further strengthen judicial records on digital grounds and make case monitoring easier in the future.
Bar associations have also welcomed the initiative. They say that the biometric system will enhance transparency in judicial proceedings and help eliminate fake cases.
Lawyers believe the system will benefit litigants as well. As there will no longer be any confusion or lack of clarity regarding the identity of the real parties.
According to the report, work will be accelerated in the next phase on further digitisation of the judicial system.
It is expected to include e-filing and online case management projects to ensure faster and more effective delivery of justice.
