Covid 19 cicada variant: Symptoms,  risks, and how to stay safe

Covid 19 cicada variant

A new Covid 19 variant is spreading across the world. Its name is BA.3.2. People call it the Covid 19 Cicada variant. Health experts are watching it very closely. Pakistan needs to stay alert.

This article explains everything in simple words. What is this variant, where it came from, what symptoms it causes, and how you can protect yourself and your family.

What is the covid 19 cicada variant?

The Covid 19 Cicada variant is real. It is not a bug-related illness, and it is not an internet joke. It is BA.3.2, an Omicron subvariant that picked up a catchy nickname.

Its official name is BA.3.2. It earned the nickname “Cicada” because it first appeared in 2024, went dormant for a while, and then resurfaced again. Just like the cicada insect that has stayed underground for years and then comes back out.

The World Health Organization classified BA.3.2 as a “variant under monitoring” in December 2025. Public health officials are tracking this hyper-mutated strain very carefully.

Where did the cicada variant come from?

Researchers first identified BA.3.2 in November 2024 in Africa. It started its global spread in 2025 and reached 23 countries as of February 2026.

BA.3.2 is a descendant of BA.3, an Omicron subvariant that emerged in 2022. Its ancestor BA.3 fizzled out but never fully disappeared.

The first case in the United States was detected in a traveler coming into the country in June 2025. By February 2026, it was detected in wastewater samples from 132 sites across at least 25 states.

In Europe, things moved faster. The Cicada variant already accounts for about 30 percent of Covid 19 sequences in Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

For Pakistan, this is a serious warning sign. When a variant spreads this fast in Europe and America, it reaches developing countries soon after.

Why is this variant different?

This is the most important thing to understand about the Covid 19 Cicada variant.

BA.3.2 has approximately 70 to 75 substitutions and deletions in the gene sequence of the spike protein. This makes it very different from the variants used in the 2025 to 2026 Covid 19 vaccines.

Think of it this way. Your immune system knows old Covid variants. But this new variant looks very different. Your body may not recognize it quickly. That is why experts are worried.

BA.3.2 has 70 to 75 mutations in its spike protein, which sets it apart from JN.1 and LP.8.1, the strains targeted by current Covid 19 vaccines. Experts believe it might be able to evade a lot of immunity already in the population.

But here is some good news. Some of these mutations may actually make the virus bind less well to human cells. So, it is not all bad news.

Covid 19 cicada variant symptoms

The symptoms of the Covid 19 Cicada variant are similar to other Covid strains. They are not dramatically different. But you should still know them.

Common symptoms include:

Cough, sore throat, tiredness, fever, headache, runny or stuffy nose, and gastrointestinal issues like stomach upset.

The most reported symptom remains with a sore throat. Some people describe it as a very painful throat, almost like a razor blade feeling.

Common symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, headache, fatigue, sore throat, cough, and sometimes mild fever. These are like other recent Covid 19 infections.

Most symptoms go away on their own with rest and care. But people with weak immune systems need to be extra careful.

Is the cicada variant more dangerous?

This question is on everyone’s mind. The answer is reassuring but not completely clear yet.

Early data indicates that BA.3.2 does not lead to more severe complications or increased deaths. Public health experts stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable populations.

No data currently indicates that the Cicada variant is any more severe than other circulating variants. Severe sore throat is reported as a common symptom along with other typical Covid symptoms.

It is unlikely that BA.3.2 will cause a wave as large or severe as the ones seen very early in the pandemic.

So, while the Covid 19 Cicada variant spreads widely, it does not appear to cause more deaths or hospital admissions at this stage. But things can change. Always be careful.

Do vaccines work against the cicada variant?

This is a key concern. The honest answer is that current vaccines offer some protection but may be less effective against this variant.

The 2025 to 2026 Covid vaccines target the JN.1 lineage and are effective at protecting against severe disease from current strains. In lab studies, these vaccines were less effective against BA.3.2, but more research is needed.

Vaccines may not work as well against Cicada infection, but they will still probably protect against severe illness. Doctors say that still makes them worth taking.

The new variant is still sensitive to Covid antiviral drugs that have been developed, so those treatments will still work.

For Pakistanis, this is very important. If you are vaccinated, you are still safer than those who are not. Your risk of getting very sick remains lower.

How is the cicada variant spreading?

Since the first case was detected in a traveler in June 2025, the Cicada variant has been detected in patients and the wastewater systems of 29 states in America.

BA.3.2 has not shown a sustained growth advantage over other co-circulating variants, according to the WHO. If it had really special advantages, we would have seen it take off and dominate globally very quickly.

It spreads the same way other Covid variants spread. Through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Through touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your face.

In Pakistan, where people gather closely in markets, mosques, schools, and public transport, the risk of spread is higher. Extra caution is important.

Who is most at risk?

Not everyone faces the same level of risk from the Covid 19 Cicada variant.

High-risk groups include elderly people above 65, people with diabetes or heart disease, people with weak immune systems, pregnant women, and children with health conditions.

Vaccination is particularly important for people at higher risk of severe disease from Covid 19, including adults over 65 and individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying conditions.

In Pakistan, millions of people have diabetes and heart disease. These people must take this variant very seriously and take all precautions.

How to stay safe from the cicada variant

You can protect yourself and your family. Follow these simple steps every day.

Stay home when you feel sick. Do not go to work, school, or public places. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid close contact with people who are coughing or sneezing.

Wear a mask in crowded places like markets and public transport. Keep your home well ventilated. Open windows to let fresh air in.

Get vaccinated if you have not already. The vaccine still reduces your risk of serious illness.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

In addition to getting vaccinated, washing hands, wearing a mask, and social distancing all help protect against Covid 19.  These steps cost nothing. But they can save your life.

What is Pakistan doing about it?

Pakistan has faced Covid 19 before. The country went through very difficult waves in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Health systems were under serious pressure.

The Covid 19 Cicada variant has not yet caused a major outbreak in Pakistan. But the virus is spreading globally and reaching new countries every month.

Pakistani health authorities need to increase surveillance at airports and border crossings. Wastewater monitoring, as done in the USA, should also be considered. Public awareness campaigns in Urdu can help ordinary citizens understand the risks and take simple protective steps.

The good news is that Pakistan’s population has a combination of natural immunity from past infections and vaccination coverage. This should provide some baseline protection.

Should you panic?

No. Do not panic. But do not ignore this either.

Even if BA.3.2 can evade existing immunity, there will likely still be some cross-reactivity, so it will not be a stranger to our immune systems.

The Covid 19 Cicada variant is something to watch carefully. It is not something to fear uncontrollably. Stay informed. Take basic precautions. Protect vulnerable family members. Pakistan is facing a growing health crisis as essential medicines run dangerously low. Are vaccines, insulin and baby milk running low in Pakistan?

Pakistan has survived Covid 19 before. With awareness and simple precautions, we can handle this variant too.
