The incident occurred during a World Cup qualifier between Portugal and Ireland, which Portugal lost 2-0.
In the 61st minute, Ronaldo attempted to elbow Irish defender Dara O’Shea. The referee initially issued a yellow card, but after a VAR review, it was upgraded to a red card.
This marks Ronaldo’s first international red card in 226 appearances for Portugal, making him the most-capped male international player. He has received 13 red cards at club level.
As a result, Ronaldo will face a mandatory one-match ban, which will affect Portugal’s next qualifier against Armenia.
Portugal could qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup by winning this match.
However, FIFA rules allow bans for violent conduct to extend for at least three matches, potentially causing Ronaldo to miss one or two games in the World Cup itself.
FIFA has not yet announced a timeline for its ruling.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez defended Ronaldo, calling the red card excessive. He said, “Ronaldo has never been sent off in 226 matches. He was fighting for the team. The action looks worse on video than it was in reality.”
During the match, Irish fans booed Ronaldo, and he responded sarcastically with a smile and thumbs up after being sent off. Ireland’s coach added that Ronaldo jokingly said, “You did a good job putting pressure on the referee.”
Portugal had hoped to secure a World Cup spot with a victory, but Ireland pulled off a shock win thanks to two goals from Troy Parrott.
Portugal now turns its attention to the match against Armenia. A win could ensure Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup appearance, provided FIFA does not impose an extended ban.
