KARACHI: The Meteorological Department has issued a second alert on Tuesday as cyclone approaches Karachi due to the low-pressure area over the Gulf of Khambhat and adjoining Gujarat (India).
According to the department, the system is located about 340 kilometers southeast of Karachi, near Saurashtra and Gujarat. It is likely to move west and southwest, and may emerge over the northeast Arabian Sea near the Gulf of Kutch by tonight or tomorrow morning.
Under its influence, rain has started in Karachi’s Sher Shah, Baldia, Mauripur, and Hawks Bay areas.
Due to favourable conditions such as sea surface temperature, moderate wind shear, and upper-level divergence, the system may intensify into a depression by tomorrow.
The temperature in Karachi are also likely to go high. The maximum temperature in Karachi could reach 40 degree Celsius.
Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are expected in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushehro Feroze, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Thatta, Sujawal, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Tando Allahyar.
Rain has also been forecast for Matiari and Karachi Division today and tomorrow.
Sea conditions are likely to remain rough to very rough, with winds blowing at 45 to 55 kilometers per hour. Fishermen in Sindh have been advised not to venture into deep waters until October 2.
The Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi is monitoring the system.
