The Punjab government has announced a delay in the inauguration of Lahore’s first electric tram project. The reason for the delay in the project is a route change. In the recent development, the Punjab government excluded the Canal Road from the route for the electric tram project.
According to the media report, in the new route for the electric tram, the areas of CBD, Gulberg, Jail Road and Istanbul Chowk are included. The Punjab government excluded Canal Road due to the green belts near the canal as the government don’t want to cut the trees.
The Minister for Transport and Mass Transit in Punjab, Bilal Akbar Khan, confirmed that the electric tram reached its first time in July 2025. He further stated that the electric tram was presented for a test run and exhibited at Expo Centre Lahore in August 2025.
Initially, a “Yellow Line” and later a trackless tram were proposed on a 27-kilometre track from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura. In addition, plans to run trams on Kalma Chowk, Liberty, Main Market, Mini Market and Hali Road were also under consideration.
