Web desk: Former United States (US) Vice President Dick Cheney has died. He was 84 years old at the time of his death.
“His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” his family said in a statement.
Dick Cheney’s Life
Dick Cheney was one of America’s most powerful vice presidents and a key figure behind the “war on terror.” He died at the age of 84, his family said.
He helped lead the United States into the Iraq War. This was later seen as a mistake based on false claims.
Cheney served as the 46th vice president under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. He was a strong and controversial figure in Washington for many years.
Dick Cheney played a major and controversial role in spreading intelligence reports. According to the reports, Saddam Hussein had developed weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
These reports were used by the Bush administration to justify starting the Iraq War. Later, it was discovered that Iraq did not have any such weapons.
This led to criticism and controversy over the accuracy of the information and Cheney’s involvement in promoting it.
After Saddam Hussein’s government was overthrown, Cheney’s former company, Halliburton, received large and profitable contracts from the US government to help rebuild Iraq.
This raised accusations of favouritism and possible corruption, which further damaged Cheney’s public reputation.
As part of the Bush administration, Cheney also played an important role in the US mission to track down. And kill Osama bin Laden after the September 11 attacks.
The hunt for bin Laden became one of the government’s main goals during Cheney’s time in office.
In his later life, he became isolated from much of his Republican Party after criticising President Donald Trump. Calling him a “coward” and the biggest threat to the republic.
In a surprising turn, Cheney voted for Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. This also showed how far he had drifted from the modern Republican Party.
Cheney had long struggled with heart disease and survived several heart attacks. After receiving a heart transplant in 2012, he lived many more active years, calling the surgery “the gift of life itself.”
