Digital balloting starts in GB for PM’s free solar scheme

The digital lottery process for selecting beneficiaries under the free solar scheme introduced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has officially begun in Gilgit‑Baltistan.

According to official details, the digital balloting system has been launched to ensure a transparent and merit-based selection of households that will receive free solar energy systems under the Prime Minister’s initiative.

The launch ceremony was inaugurated by the caretaker Chief Minister of Gilgit‑Baltistan, Yar Muhammad. Speaking at the event, he termed the initiative a major step toward promoting renewable energy and providing relief to people facing high electricity costs.

Officials said the digital lottery system will help streamline the selection process, ensuring fairness and transparency in distributing solar systems to eligible beneficiaries across the region.

Additional Chief Secretary Mushtaq Ahmed said that a completely transparent and modern digital lottery method has been adopted for the selection of applicants to ensure that their rights reach the beneficiaries. A total of 58 MW solar systems will be provided in the region under this project.

40 MW has been allocated for domestic consumers, while 18 MW has been allocated for small businesses and IT institutions.

Provincial ministers have termed the Prime Minister’s move as a major convenience for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, saying that it will not only help in overcoming the power crisis but will also prove to be a milestone in the economic and social development of the region.
