The Punjab government has cancelled a recent fare increase for double-decker buses following orders from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
This decision follows public backlash against the fare hike for the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab’s (TDCP) “Sight-Seeing” bus service in Lahore.
According to reports, the fares for the bus service had been increased by 200 to 500 rupees for standard routes, and between 5,000 to 20,000 rupees for corporate sectors, educational institutions, and commercial activities.
Although the fare increase for the double-decker bus was enacted by TDCP, the Punjab government immediately intervened to reverse the hike.
Maryam Nawaz voiced her dissatisfaction with the fare increases, particularly for the buses operating on three major routes in Lahore.
As a result, she instructed the appropriate authorities to reverse the double-decker bus fare hike and reinstate the previous fare structure.
In a statement, the Chief Minister said that the double-decker bus service was established to enhance tourism in Lahore, and raising the fares would impose an undue burden on the public.
“We are committed to providing the best recreational facilities to the public at minimal charges, and we will persist in doing so,” she stated.
