Dr Warda case: prime suspect killed
The prime suspect in the high-profile murder of Dr Warda Mushtaq was killed in an alleged police encounter near the Thandiani-Kundla area on Sunday evening, police sources confirmed.
The suspect, identified as Shamrez, was killed on the spot while resisting arrest during a targeted raid against armed suspects.
His body was subsequently shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital.
Authorities described Shamrez as a dangerous criminal who had been evading arrest since the brutal abduction and murder of Dr Warda earlier this month.
Dr Warda, a medical officer at DHQ Hospital Abbottabad, was abducted and later murdered. This crime sparked widespread outrage across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Following the incident, several suspects were arrested. Shamrez had remained elusive, prompting intensified police operations.
A high-level joint investigation team was formed by the provincial government to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry into the case.
Speaking at a press conference at the police lines late Sunday night, DPO Abbottabad Haroonur Rasheed said Shamrez was killed during a police encounter, while his two accomplices fled into the Thandiani forest.
“The police received information that the main and absconding accused in Dr Warda’s case was at Thandiani-Kund along with his accomplices.
When police raided the place, the accused opened fire. In the ensuing exchange, Shamrez was killed,” DPO Rasheed said.
He added that the operation to arrest the fleeing men was ongoing.
The DPO noted that the arrest of Shamrez had been a major challenge for police confirmed that his body had been taken to Ayub Medical Complex, though media access was not allowed.
