ISLAMABAD: As part of the second phase to strengthen security system in the federal capital, the district administration has decided to include motorcycles in Islamabad’s electronic vehicle tagging (E-tags) system.
The move is part of the next phase of the capital’s digital vehicle monitoring drive.
Officials say the decision aims to strengthen security surveillance and improve traffic discipline.
So far, the system mainly covered cars and other four-wheel vehicles. Several M-Tag and E-Tag issuance centres and roadside booths have been set up across Islamabad to facilitate the public.
Motorcycles make up a large portion of daily traffic in Islamabad.
Authorities believe their inclusion will help close long-standing monitoring gaps.
RFID-based e-tag readers are being installed at key locations across the city and these readers will allow real-time identification once motorcycles are formally added to the system.
Project details
The project is being implemented by Safe City Islamabad in coordination with the Frontier Works Organization.
The initiative is being supervised by Islamabad Police. Once tagged, vehicles can be monitored through a secure digital network.
Law enforcement agencies can verify registration details and track movement when required. The Ministry of Interior, ICT Administration, and FWO are jointly supporting the rollout.
The system is integrated with Islamabad’s Excise and Taxation Department to allow real-time data sharing through an encrypted network.
The installation of M-Tags and E-Tags of vehicles began on November 14, 2025.
