The Federal Minister of Energy, Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, has announced that electricity will be cheaper in Pakistan.

While speaking virtually through a video link in the workshop conducted at LUMS University, Lahore, the Minister of Energy said that the electricity prices will soon be very low in Pakistan.

The consumers can even store energy in the batteries and will be able to use it at night, he added.

He stated that the new framework is underway to improve efficiency in the energy sector and to reduce the high rates of electricity.

Awais Leghari said, “The Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have effectively been ‘buried for the future’, and the government has withdrawn from the IPP business model and halted plans for adding an additional 10,000 megawatts through such agreements.”

The Minister of Energy further said that we are now shifting towards privatisation, smart metering, and encouraging the private energy infrastructures to introduce modern technology.

He said that the electricity tariffs will be structured differently for both the agriculture and industrial sectors, as the off-peak rates will be reduced to Rs6 or Rs7 per unit during the daytime hours.

Awais Leghari explained that we are strictly monitoring the faulty and defective billing systems by making it sure that faulty meters are eliminated to avoid unnecessary financial burden. These meters will not remain in operation for the long term.

The electricity distribution companies across Pakistan will be privatised in the coming one to two years, said the Minister of Energy.
