Eurostar group has advised passengers to delay their journeys after what it explained as a “major disruption” affecting the whole train services through the Channel Tunnel.
Additionally, the rail operator said that the disruption occurred due to an issue with the overhead power supply inside the tunnel, which was further worsened by a stopped Le Shuttle train.
Therefore, services that can run are facing significant delays, and last-minute cancellations are there.
In a statement published on its official website, Eurostar advised customers to reorganise their travel plans. The company said, “We strongly advise all our passengers to postpone their journey to a different date,”. Adding that travellers should not come to stations except if they already hold a ticket for travel.
Besides this, passengers were also encouraged to monitor live service updates to stay updated about the status of their trains.
The disruption comes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, between Christmas and New Year, when passenger demand is usually high.
Eurostar operates high-speed rail services linking London’s St Pancras International station with major European cities including Amsterdam, Paris, and Brussels.
Despite the current disruption situation, Eurostar reported record passenger numbers during the previous year, carrying 19.5 million travellers, an increase of about five percent compared with the earlier years.
The growth was driven in part by enhanced demand linked to the Paralympic Games and the Paris Olympics.
The group has been the only operator of passenger rail services through the Channel Tunnel since its opening.
Even so, competition is expected to grow in the coming years. British entrepreneur Richard Branson has announced plans to launch a rival service, while Italy’s state-owned rail operator Trenitalia has also said it plans to enter the Paris–London market by 2029.
