Web desk: At least 23 people were killed in a fire at a nightclub in Arpora village, North Goa, India, following a gas cylinder explosion late Saturday night, the Indian police confirmed.
Chief Minister of Goa Pramod Sawant said most of the victims were kitchen staff, including three women.
He added that “three to four tourists” were also among the dead. Of the 23 fatalities, three succumbed to burn injuries while the others died from suffocation.
The blaze broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane, a popular nightclub located around 25 kilometres from Panaji, India.
The venue, which opened last year, reportedly did not comply with fire safety regulations, according to the chief minister, Indian media reports.
“The inquiry will examine the exact cause of the fire and whether fire safety norms and building rules were followed. Those found responsible will face most stringent action under the law- any negligence will be dealt with firmly,” Sawant said.
He described the incident as “unfortunate,” occurring during the peak tourist season, and promised a detailed investigation and strict action against those responsible.
Goa Police Chief Alok Kumar confirmed the fire was caused by a cylinder blast.
Local BJP MLA Michael Lobo said all 23 bodies were recovered and sent to the government medical college at Bambolim.
Firefighters and police teams rushed to the scene immediately and conducted rescue operations through the night.
Mr Lobo added that officials would carry out fire safety audits at all nightclubs to prevent similar incidents.
The Calangute panchayat will issue notices to all nightclubs on Monday, requiring proof of fire safety compliance. Clubs that fail to meet the regulations may have their licenses revoked, reports the Indian media.
Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident at Arpora has taken the lives of 23 people.
