The crimes of Narendra Modi have been exposed once again, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has uncovered the alleged plot to assassinate the Sikh political activist and lawyer, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who is based in the US.

Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun says the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has warned him of an “imminent threat” to his life ahead of a planned visit to Canada.

Pannun told CBS News on Thursday that FBI agents had visited his New York residence to inform him of the threat.

He said the FBI issued a “Duty to Warn” notification on 15 October, with particular concern about his planned travel to Canada to attend a referendum on Sikh independence.

The warning comes ahead of a non-binding “Khalistan Referendum” scheduled for 18 October in Edmonton, Canada. The event is organised by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), an organisation that campaigns for an independent Sikh homeland in the Indian state of Punjab.

Pannun, a dual US-Canadian citizen and SFJ’s general counsel, plans to travel from the United States to attend the event.

According to CBS News, FBI agents told Pannun they were investigating leads and that the threat was linked to his potential travel to Canada. They did not provide further details, the broadcaster reported.

Pannun has also said he received warnings from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) about threats to his life and his residence in Ontario.

The latest warning follows a case in which an Indian national pleaded guilty in a US federal court in February to plotting to assassinate Pannun in New York.

Prosecutors said Nikhil Gupta, 54, admitted to charges including murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering.

According to the US Justice Department, Gupta acted at the direction of an Indian government employee identified as Vikash Yadav, who was said to have worked for India’s Cabinet Secretariat, which oversees the country’s foreign intelligence service, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

The department said Yadav recruited Gupta in May 2023 to arrange Pannun’s killing. Gupta then contacted a person he believed to be a criminal associate, who was in fact cooperating with US law enforcement. That person introduced him to an undercover officer posing as a hitman.

Prosecutors said the alleged conspirators agreed to pay $100,000 for the killing, with about $15,000 paid in advance. The plot was disrupted before an attack could take place.

The case has renewed concerns over the safety of Sikh separatist activists in North America.
