Federal Government to end solar net metering

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Government has made a decision to end the net metering system for solar users and replace it with a gross billing policy.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued a draft to implement the decision.

The net metering system allowed the users to save both their electricity and their bills.

The excess electricity used in the day was stored back into the grid and was used again at night by the consumers, which makes their electricity bill lower.

The Ministry of Energy claims that due to an excessive amount of solar users in the State, the electricity-generating companies are at a loss right now.

This cost billions of rupees, and the grid and system costs were not being recovered.

Under the proposed gross billing system, users will buy electricity at high rates while selling it back cheaply.

Critics of the Decision

Nevertheless, critics argue that the real problem lies in poor government policies and high capacity payments to private power plants.

They added by saying that the Government should promote the Green Energy Program. While it is forcing the public to buy expensive electricity.

Due to a lack of public hearing of this issue, it has created a state of chaos in the nation.

The public has demanded PM Shehbaz Sharif to take immediate notice of the problem and address it as soon as possible.
