Fidan: Governance must precede disarmament

DOHA: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that a reliable Palestinian civil administration must be launched in Gaza. Before the disarmament of Hamas is achieved.

Fidan, at the Doha Forum on December 6, called disarming Hamas without retreat “neither realistic nor doable.”

By putting a scrutinised, trained Palestinian police force in place, backed by an International Stabilisation Force (ISF), to secure the Strip before Hamas is expected to surrender control.

Turkey Outlines Next Step for Gaza Peace

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has laid out a clear order of events he believes is crucial for safeguarding the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire.

And eventually bringing long-term stability to the region. Addressing the press at the Doha Forum, Fidan insisted that the deployment of a new Palestinian civil administration is necessary.

And a non-Hamas police force must be ranked first over the demobilization of the troop.

The top Turkish mediator claimed that Hamas is willing to hand over governance of the territory, but only if the security void is filled by a credible, locally run force.

He underlined that hastening the disarmament of Hamas without first establishing a governing structure and a trained police force would be a massive oversight.

The proposed police force, which Fidan stated would clearly eliminate Hamas members, would be supported by an international stabilisation force.

He further warned that failure by the international community to progress this stage of the peace plan would amount to a “huge failure” for the world.

Fidan also noted that the United States is pressing Israel regarding Turkey’s willingness to join this international force.

Ankara, a vocal critic of Israel, has offered troops to join the proposed ISF to secure Gaza post-conflict.
