FIFA has announced that it will review its ticket pricing system for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This news came in after receiving strong backlash from football fans over the extremely high prices for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 2026 tournament will be hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico. It has already caused concern among supporters because tickets are becoming expensive for ordinary fans.
FIFA secretary-general Mattias Grafstrom stated that the organisation understands the complaints and will revise possible changes before the 2030 tournament. However, he also defended the current pricing system by saying that ticket costs reflect the North American market, where major sports events often use “dynamic pricing”, meaning ticket prices rise or fall depending on demand, popularity of matches, and how many seats remain available.
Football Supporters Europe group have strongly criticized FIFA’s pricing model by stating some prices as unfair and damaging to loyal football supporters. Reports showed that resale tickets for the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium reached extremely high amounts. Some listings reportedly cost millions of dollars. Many other resale tickets have also appeared online for tens of thousands of dollars.
Football is becoming too commercialised and that regular supporters are slowly being pushed out of the sport’s biggest events. Many fans believe the World Cup should remain accessible to people from different economic backgrounds rather than becoming an event for the wealthy to afford only.
Moreover, FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended the pricing strategy by saying the tournament is expected to generate around $13 billion in revenue. He added on that much of this revenue will later be invested into football development programs worldwide. FIFA says these funds help improve youth academies and football projects in many countries.
Resultantly, this backlash is a product of the costly prices of football. Fan groups find it unfair to the loyal football supporters who are not able to afford the tickets because of the pricing system.
