Anxiety and excitement grip fans before world cup

FIFA World Cup

Football’s largest event, FIFA, is now less than a month away, but rising ticket costs, political tensions in the United States and the conflict between Iran and US have generated growing anxieties about the World Cup.

The expanded tournament, which will feature a record 48 teams, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

It will begin at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and end at MetLife Stadium.

For the six weeks’ football World Cup, millions of supporters are expected to move from one side of North America to the other.

But there has been increasing criticism of FIFA regarding ticket prices and it has come under fire for making the tournament unavailable for the ordinary spectator.

The final price of the most expensive ticket is almost $33,000, whereas it cost around $1,600 in 2022 World Cup.

FIFA’s President Gianni Infantino has justified the prices say they are reflective of American entertainment industry.

While FIFA has claimed that tickets are in huge demand, there are several games left with seating available on resale sites.

Also fueling concerns are political tensions in the United States. Ever since taking office, Donald Trump has stirred up new issues with US neighbours Canada and Mexico and enacted contentious immigration measures.

Human rights organisations are concerned that the World Cup might be marred by worries about press freedom, immigration and the ability to protest.

For some time, there was even doubt about Iran’s involvement after American and Israeli military action against Iran earlier this year.

Iran will play as scheduled with group stage games played in the United States, confirmed FIFA.

Although the tournament has been controversial, football fans are hopeful that the occasion will provide memorable moments once the games begin.
