The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flash flood alert for Chitral and Swat, warning of potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), landslides, and other weather-related emergencies in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the authority, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms are expected to affect Upper and Lower Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan, and Mansehra from June 18 to June 22. The forecast weather conditions could increase the risk of flash floods and trigger glacial lake outbursts in vulnerable mountainous areas.
The PDMA has directed district administrations to remain vigilant and continuously monitor sensitive locations. Rescue teams and emergency response agencies have also been instructed to keep personnel, machinery, and equipment on standby to deal with any untoward situation.
Authorities have been asked to alert residents living in high-risk areas and, if required, move them to safer locations. The PDMA further advised tourists and the general public to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous regions during the forecast period and strictly follow official safety advisories.
The alert comes amid concerns that persistent rainfall in northern districts could lead to flash flooding and landslides, posing risks to local communities and travelers.
Met office forecasts thunderstorms, heavy rain in several regions
The Meteorological Department has predicted a significant change in weather conditions across various parts of the country over the next 12 hours, particularly during the night.
According to the forecast, rain accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms and possible hail is expected in several regions. Citizens have been advised to stay updated on weather developments and take necessary precautions, especially during periods of severe weather.
The weather system is likely to bring temporary relief from the prevailing heat in affected areas, while authorities continue to monitor the situation.
According to the department, rain accompanied by strong winds, gusts, and thunderstorms is expected at isolated places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab, Islamabad, Upper Sindh, and northern and northeastern Balochistan. Hailstorms may also occur in some areas.
The report further states that very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of northeastern Balochistan and southern Punjab, which may lead to water accumulation in low-lying areas and cause local disruptions.
The Meteorological Department has advised citizens to remain cautious during this period, particularly by avoiding unnecessary travel during strong winds, thunderstorms, and hailstorms to prevent any potential accidents.
Meanwhile, hot and dry weather is expected to persist in other parts of the country, with temperatures likely to remain above normal. The department added that this change in weather is expected to be temporary; however, citizens are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather conditions and take necessary precautions to carry out their daily activities safely.
