Former England top all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is set to become the new head coach of the Sydney Thunder. Reports suggest Flintoff has moved ahead of other contenders in the race for the role, with an official announcement expected soon.
Sydney Thunder began searching for a world-class T20 coach following the departure of former coach Trevor Bayliss. Although the team reached the final of the 2024–25 season under Bayliss, their overall performance last season was disappointing, as they finished at the bottom of the points table, according to media reports.
Flintoff has spent the past year working as head coach of the England Lions. In addition, he has also served as a consultant with England’s white-ball team. His franchise coaching experience includes a stint with Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, where the side performed impressively under his guidance.
Interestingly, Flintoff previously played in the Big Bash League for Brisbane Heat during the 2014–15 season.
One of Flintoff’s first major challenges as coach could be deciding the future of star batter David Warner as captain. Warner is currently facing charges related to alleged traffic law violations, including drunk driving, with the court expected to deliver its decision at the end of June.
Meanwhile, New South Wales Cricket has recently made several changes to its domestic structure, including appointing James Hopes as coach of the Sydney Sixers and Brad Haddin as the new state coach. Flintoff’s expected arrival is being described as the beginning of a new and aggressive era for the Sydney Thunder.
