Sharif Osman Hadi, 32, was a spokesperson for Inquilab Mancha (Platform for Revolution) and had taken part in student-led protests that toppled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government last year.

Police and paramilitary forces were deployed across Dhaka and other cities in Bangladesh on Friday after violent protests erupted overnight following the death of the popular youth leader.

Authorities fear more unrest ahead of the national elections in which he was set to contest.

While the streets were calm in the morning, residents said they were concerned about possible violence after Friday prayers.

He was shot in the head by masked attackers in Dhaka last Friday while launching his election campaign.

Hadi was first treated at a local hospital and later flown to Singapore for advanced treatment. There, he died after six days on life support.

Known as a vocal critic of India, Hadi’s group describes itself as a revolutionary cultural platform inspired by the spirit of uprising.

Videos shared on social media showed mobs vandalising the offices of leading newspapers, including Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, on Thursday night.

Bangladesh summons India’s envoy

Previously, Bangladeshi authorities have claimed an alleged plot involving former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina aimed at targeting political figures, according to media reports.

The revelations surfaced following a violent shooting incident in Dhaka that left Usman Hadi critically injured. It prompted the government to take diplomatic action against India.

He was a member of the ruling Awami League, was shot in the capital and remains in serious condition.

Officials allege that Hadi had also received threatening phone calls, which investigators say were traced back to India.

In response, the Bangladeshi government summoned the Indian ambassador. It formally requested the extradition of individuals suspected of involvement in the attack.

Authorities in Dhaka have accused Sheikh Hasina of directing terror-style operations to destabilise the country ahead of the upcoming elections.

They further say that India is providing space for the former PM to interfere in Bangladesh’s internal political process. She had fled there after stepping down.
