Khyber Teaching Hospital launches free kidney transplant services

Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) has officially launched a free kidney transplant programme in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The hospital celebrated its important milestone by successfully performing its first kidney transplant operation. It opened the door for patients suffering from serious kidney diseases to access treatment without financial burden.

According to the hospital administration, the inaugural transplant involved a brother donating one of his kidneys to his sibling. Upon the successful completion of the operation, both the donor and recipient remained in stable condition after the procedure. Both individuals recovered well following surgery and were later discharged from the hospital. The successful operation was described as a major achievement for the medical team and a positive beginning for the newly established transplant programme.

The administration announced that kidney transplant services at the hospital will now be offered free of charge to eligible patients. This initiative is expected to provide relief to many families who previously struggled to afford expensive transplant procedures.

Officials stated that the programme aims to improve access to advanced medical treatment for patients, and that the service will help bridge the gap between the increasing demand for kidney transplants and the limited availability of affordable treatment options in the province. The hospital administration believes that the launch of this programme will significantly strengthen healthcare services in the region.

Moreover, Kidney disease remains a growing health challenge in Pakistan, with thousands of patients requiring regular dialysis or transplantation every year. The cost of a kidney transplant is often unaffordable, forcing patients to either delay treatment or depend on charitable support.

The newly launched facility is expected to benefit patients from Peshawar as well as other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It aims to provide equal treatment opportunities regardless of a patient’s financial circumstances.
