GEO news transmission went off air on the famous streaming app Tamasha after the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) ban.
PEMRA has suspended the License of Geo News after a special transmission for 10th Muharram.
According to the PEMRA suspension order, Geo News showed sensitive religious visualisation. The authority stated that the broadcast of such representation, given religious and cultural sensitivities, is a serious regulatory concern.
The visual display of the content could potentially hurt religious sentiments and cause a disturbance to public peace and law and order.
Under Section 30 of the PEMRA Ordinance 2002, the authority has ordered suspension of the licence of Geo News for a period of fifteen days with immediate effect.
Transmission Geo News shall remain suspended on satellite and all distribution networks/platforms for the given period.
Geo News has also been directed to conduct an internal inquiry into the editorial, monitoring and compliance lapse leading to the broadcast of the subject content, and submit its findings to the Council of Complaints.
Geo News has been praised for its responsible response following the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) ban, with the network’s management taking immediate corrective measures in light of the sensitive nature of the issue.
According to reports, the controversy started from the alleged negligence or error of a few individuals during a programme, which affected the reputation of the entire organisation. In response, Geo News acted swiftly by initiating action against those responsible, demonstrating a strong commitment to institutional accountability.
The network also issued a formal public apology and temporarily suspended its television transmission and digital platforms as a mark of respect for public sentiments and to acknowledge the seriousness of the matter.
Observers say the response highlights that the true measure of a media organisation lies not only in avoiding mistakes but also in how it addresses them. Geo News’ quick apology and corrective actions have been described as an example of responsible media conduct.
It is hoped that the incident will lead to stronger editorial oversight in the future to help prevent similar situations involving religious sensitivities and national values.
Media analysts say timely accountability, public apologies, and meaningful corrective measures are principles that all media organisations should strive to uphold.
