Germany clinched their fourth Hockey World Cup title after edging Spain 1-0 in a tense final at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre. The defending champions held firm under sustained Spanish pressure before Michel Struthoff struck in the third quarter to put Germany ahead. The goal proved decisive as Germany’s resilient defence held Spain at bay until the final whistle.
The defending champions successfully retained their title after a thrilling and closely contested match. Spain dominated possession for long periods and created more scoring opportunities, but Germany’s solid defence kept their opponents from finding the net. Neither team managed to score in the first two quarters, although Spain continued to apply pressure and launch attacks. Germany remained disciplined defensively and waited patiently for an opportunity.
Their patience paid off in the latter stages of the third quarter when Michel Struthoff converted Germany’s key chance of the match to give his team a 1-0 lead. The goal proved to be decisive as Germany held on to secure victory. With this triumph, Germany won the Hockey World Cup for the fourth time, equaling Pakistan’s record of four World Cup titles. Earlier, the Netherlands and Argentina faced each other in the third-place playoff. Argentina defeated the Netherlands 2-1 to claim the bronze medal.
Argentina secured a historic bronze medal at the World Cup after producing a stunning 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the third-place playoff, earning a place on the podium for just the second time in their history.
The Netherlands made the brighter start and enjoyed much of the early possession, but Argentina’s disciplined defence frustrated their opponents and prevented them from creating any clear-cut opportunities. Neither side was able to break the deadlock before the interval, with the match remaining goalless at half-time.
Argentina gradually grew into the contest after the break and eventually took the lead in the 41st minute. A fierce effort from the 23-metre line found Tomas Domene in space near the goal, and he produced a clever one-handed deflection to send the ball into the net and put Argentina ahead.
The Dutch suffered another setback five minutes later when Jorrit Croon was shown a 10-minute yellow card after accidentally striking an Argentine player in the face with his stick. Despite being reduced to 10 players, the Netherlands responded strongly and found an equaliser in the 49th minute.
From their second penalty corner of the match, Jip Janssen executed the variation perfectly, picking out Floris Middendorp, who finished the move to make it 1-1.
The Netherlands thought they had taken the lead late in the game, but their effort was ruled out for dangerous play with just seven minutes remaining. Argentina immediately took advantage of the reprieve.
