Google has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature in Gmail, known as “AI Inbox”, making it available to users in the United States (US).
The tool was first introduced in January to a small group of testers.
Gmail AI inbox feature
The feature is currently limited to subscribers of Google’s AI Ultra plan, which costs $249.99 a month.
It is also still described as a beta version, meaning it is under testing and may change.
Despite its name, the AI Inbox does not replace the standard email view.
Instead, it sits on top of the usual inbox and offers summaries of incoming messages.
It also suggests tasks based on email content and points out topics that may need attention.
The system is powered by Google’s Gemini AI.
The usefulness of the feature depends on how accurately the AI can interpret emails.
Users must rely on the system to pick out what matters most, which raises questions about reliability.
AI tools have improved in recent years, but they can still make mistakes or miss important details.
For now, access is limited to users in the US who are paying for the highest-tier AI subscription.
Google has not said whether the feature will be offered more widely or included in lower-cost plans in the future.
Pros of AI inbox feature
The new feature has the following advantages:
- The AI algorithm identifies the most important emails in the inbox and lists them as tasks.
- It provides a summary of the conversation taken place between any of the contacts.
- Users can ask multiple questions to the AI chatbot regarding their inbox and can receive a well-calculated answer.
- One can also use the ‘Help me write’ feature to create a draft of an email based on the prompt given.
