Good news for solar consumers: NEPRA maintains net metering policy

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced that it will maintain the net metering policy for existing solar consumers.

NEPRA has issued a draft amendment to the Solar Policy 2026 and has invited suggestions from stakeholders within 30 days.

According to the NEPRA notification, the old rates for existing net metering consumers will remain in place, and electricity will continue to be purchased from them.

The existing solar net metering agreements will remain in force until the end of their terms. The notification states that the amendments will be implemented from February 9, 2026.

It should be noted that NEPRA had issued a notification last week announcing the end of the net metering policy in Pakistan.

Under the new regulations, the total number of solar consumers in Pakistan will be covered under a net billing system instead of net metering.

The Solar Consumer Regulations 2026 have been issued, under which electricity purchased from new solar customers will be bought at Rs. 11 per unit, and the duration of contracts with new solar customers has been reduced from 7 years to 5 years.

It is worth mentioning to her that Prime Minister (PM) Shahbaz Sharif has earlier taken notice of new regulations issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) regarding solar panels and has directed the Power Division to file a review appeal.


A high-level special meeting was held last Wednesday in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss NEPRA’s newly issued regulations.


The prime minister instructed the Power Division to immediately submit a review petition to NEPRA to ensure full protection of existing contracts of current solar consumers.
