PM scheme E bikes

The government of Pakistan has unveiled plans to distribute 76,000 of electric motorcycles this year as part of Prime Minister Electric Vehicle Scheme with aim of availing eco-friendly transport to the masses.

Under the initiative buyers will get a subsidy amount of Rs80,000 per electric motorcycle significantly bringing down the prices of an electric motorcycle for students, who earn day-to-day wages and for low-income people who travel to work places daily. Authorities confirmed that the application, verification and allocation process would be fully digital in order to guarantee transparency and fairness.

Chief Executive Officer of Engineering Development Board Hammad Mansoor said the government has allocated Rs100 billion for the scheme for the next five years with Rs9 billion in the current fiscal year. He added that subsidies will be given for about 116,000 electric motorcycles this year although roughly 76,000 units are expected delivery as early as June.

Officials noted that subsidized electrical bicycles will be priced between Rs50000 to Rs60000 lesser than the available market options that will allow users to save up to Rs8000 savings in their electricity bills every month. Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a valid driving license in order to qualify.

The government believes the initiative will help reduce air and noise pollution and lessen fuel imports and encourage the adoption of clean energy. Experts say that the move could serve as a tipping point in the urban mobility of Pakistan giving a boost to the move to electric vehicles in the coming years.
