For the first time in the history of Islamabad, modern technology has been integrated into the city’s tree plantation drive, marking a significant step toward smart environmental management in the federal capital.
A comprehensive digital tree census has officially been launched to ensure accurate documentation and effective monitoring of planted trees across the city.
QR codes being affixed to each tree
As part of this innovative initiative, QR codes are being affixed to each tree to enhance transparency, tracking and long-term care.
Through these QR codes, detailed information, including the botanical name of the tree, its precise location, and the particulars of the institution or individual responsible for planting it, will be digitally recorded and made easily accessible.
The initiative was unveiled during the Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2026, jointly organised by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the National Press Club (NPC). The campaign aims to transform the federal capital into a cleaner and greener city.
An ambitious target has been set to plant one million environment-friendly trees across Islamabad under the campaign.
Dispersing seed balls over Margalla Hills National Park
Addressing media representatives, CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa said the drive focuses on planting indigenous, fruit-bearing, and shade-giving trees to promote ecological sustainability.
He added that the process of dispersing seed balls over the Margalla Hills National Park is ongoing to help preserve the area’s natural beauty.
The chairman also announced the introduction of a dedicated route for eco-friendly electric buses for journalists and media personnel in the city. Modern digital bus stops are being established to support these electric buses and promote sustainable urban transport.
Emphasising collective responsibility, Randhawa said the success of the plantation campaign depends on the active participation of all stakeholders. He urged citizens, particularly schoolchildren, to play their full role in environmental protection efforts alongside the authorities.
