A young man whose wedding was just a week away sacrificed his life to stop a suicide bomber at the Khadijat-ul-Kubra mosque attack in Islamabad, a private media channel reported on Sunday.

The name of the young man was Aun Abbas, who sacrificed his life to save the lives of dozens of individuals during a suicide bombing on Friday in Islamabad. According to the media reports, 33 people lost their lives and around 169 others got injured in a suicide bombing at Khadijat-ul-Kubra mosque.

Aun Abbas’ family confirmed that he was engaged and his nikah was scheduled in the coming Ramzan. The family also said that the rukhsati of Aun was scheduled after Eid al-Fitr.

Aun’s brother said that Aun was standing near the gate when a suicide bomber shot at him and tried to force his way inside.

“He tried to stop the attacker and grabbed him. At that moment, the bomber detonated himself. We are heartbroken, but we are also proud that he gave his life to save many others. If the attacker had managed to enter further inside, the loss would have been far greater,” the brother said.

The family said the traditional sehra that Aun was meant to wear as a groom was instead placed on his grave.

According to several media reports, the suicide bomber was Pakistani but was working for ISIS. The defence minister, Khawaja Asif, said that the suicide bomber travelled to Afghanistan multiple times.

The authorities confirmed that the family of the suicide bomber was extremist as well, and two brothers and one brother-in-law of the suicide bomber are currently in the custody of Pakistan.

The name of the suicide bomber was Yasir, and the family confirmed that Yasir was not in contact with them for a year.
