GTA 6 pre-release beta version scam hits gamers around the world

A fake pre-release beta version of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 has hit the gaming community around the world.

The scam works through an email that invites you to play a beta version of GTA 6. It claims to test any bugs before the official release of the game.

Those who are tempted to play this version, find themselves exposed to the risk of their personal data and bank details being leaked.

Personal details that are asked can include name, address and date of birth. Log in information for the official game can also be demanded.

Cybercriminals can then exploit this information.

On fake websites and emails, players are told that they are part of a special group who can play GTA 6 early.

What do the scams look like?

One site invites the eager player by saying, “We need you to help build Vice City.”

It tempts the player by suggesting early access, free full game along with an exclusive ‘beta badge’

In some cases, the website will give the player a code, a beta key for accessing the game on consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation 5.

Some gamers are asked to download a suspicious looking software. It has also been called GTA Mobile 6.

Malware can quickly target your computer once you download the software. It can allow criminals to steal sensitive bank data.

On the other hand, some scams are also hitting PC and Android gamers despite the game not being announced on these platforms.

How to protect yourself

Players have been warned to not trust any suspicious looking sites. They must look into the background of any early access offer.

In other words, you can depend on official announcements from the creators of the GTA 6 such as Rockstar games.

You can keep a lookout on gaming stores like the Xbox Marketplace and PlayStation store too.

In the case of entering your bank details on a fake website, you must report it to your bank as fraud.

Players have also been urged to change their gaming passwords if they have entered them into a suspicious website.
