Four major highways in Islamabad to get major overhaul

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to revamp and re-mark lanes on four of Islamabad’s busiest highways. These key roads have significantly deteriorated over time due to long-term neglect and are now in poor condition, prompting urgent rehabilitation efforts.

The sources revealed that the highways included in the rehabilitation plan are Srinagar Highway, Jinnah Avenue, Murree Road and Islamabad Expressway.

The CDA has invited tenders for the carpeting, lane marking, and rehabilitation work, which are scheduled to be opened on July 13. Under the plan, Srinagar Highway from Serena Chowk to GT Road will be resurfaced for Rs 1.09 billion.

The Islamabad Expressway from Faisal Mosque to Rawat will be restored for Rs 800 million. Murree Road from Faizabad to Serena Chowk will be rehabilitated for Rs 55 million. Jinnah Avenue from D-Chowk to F-11 will be resurfaced for Rs 450 million.

It is worth mentioning here that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a new dual carriageway along the Islamabad Expressway in June.

The project involves the construction of a nine-kilometre dual carriageway with three lanes in each direction, replacing the existing service road. The new road will extend from Faizabad to the Gulberg Greens stop and is estimated to cost Rs. 7.4 billion.

According to officials, the project will be carried out under a government-to-government arrangement in accordance with the relevant public procurement rules. Earlier, the CDA had initiated a competitive bidding process and received technical bids from 11 private companies before deciding to adopt the alternative execution model.

Officials added that the final cost of the project will be determined after the procurement process is completed. Construction is expected to begin in the coming days once all necessary formalities have been finalised.
