ISLAMABAD: The government has announced that all three-phase electricity meters across the country will be replaced with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meters by December 2026.
Launched under the RDSS scheme, this nationwide project aims to modernise Pakistan’s power network, curb electricity theft, and ensure accurate billing. The Power Division has fixed December 2026 as the final deadline for full implementation.
The move comes after years of public complaints about power theft, inflated bills, and lack of transparency. With the introduction of smart meters, the government hopes to ensure fairer and more efficient energy use for both consumers and power companies.
What are AMI Smart Meters?
AMI smart meters are advanced digital devices that record electricity use in real time. Unlike traditional meters, they automatically send consumption data to distribution companies.
Key Features:
- Real-time electricity tracking
- Automatic data sharing with DISCOs
- Detection of theft or tampering
- Accurate billing without manual reading
- Consumer access via mobile apps and online portals
This upgrade will end the era of “guess billing” and frequent disputes. Consumers will pay only for the electricity they actually use.
