Following his impressive run of form, Pakistani opener Abdullah Shafique is set to face his biggest challenge yet, with all eyes now on his performances in the upcoming Test series in England.
West Indies great Ian Bishop believes English conditions are a true test for any batter but says Abdullah Shafique has the temperament, technique, and composure needed to succeed in one of cricket’s toughest environments. According to Bishop, Abdullah is a calm, composed, and responsible batter who has the patience and ability to build long innings, even in difficult situations.
He also pointed out that although Abdullah has previously played a few matches in England while representing Yorkshire, giving him valuable experience of the conditions and pitches, it remains difficult for any batter to perform consistently in English conditions. It is worth mentioning here that Abdullah Shafique was included in Pakistan’s squad for the second Test against the West Indies after Shan Masood suffered an injury.
Abdullah went on to play a remarkable unbeaten innings of 160 runs in the first innings, becoming the first Pakistani batter in 49 years to score more than 150 runs in the West Indies. Abdullah Shafiq played a memorable innings in the second Test against the West Indies, putting Pakistan in a strong position.
When play resumed on the third day at Queen’s Park Oval, Pakistan resumed their innings with captain Babar Azam unbeaten on 84 and Abdullah Shafiq on 107. Pakistan were eventually bowled out for 387. Abdullah Shafiq remained unbeaten on 160, producing a remarkable innings.
His knock of 160 was not only crucial for Pakistan in the match but also historically significant. He became the first Pakistani batter in 49 years to score more than 150 runs in a Test match in the West Indies. The previous Pakistani to achieve the feat was Majid Khan, who scored 167 in Guyana in 1977. Remarkably, three of Pakistan’s last four Test innings of 150 or more away from home have been scored by Abdullah Shafiq.
