Electricity consumers across the country may face an increase of Rs1.73 per unit under the proposed monthly fuel adjustment for August. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a petition seeking the adjustment, with a hearing scheduled for September 29.

The proposed increase would also apply to consumers of K-Electric. According to the CPPA, 14.464 billion units of electricity were supplied to distribution companies (DISCOs) in August, with the average cost of electricity supplied to DISCOs standing at Rs8.82 per unit.

Hydropower accounted for 37.84% of total electricity generation during the month. Local coal contributed 10.88%, while imported coal accounted for 15.59%. Meanwhile, 2.15% of electricity was generated using furnace oil, 7.04% from local gas and 8.48% from imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). The generation cost was Rs 45.25 per unit for electricity produced from furnace oil and Rs 45.92 per unit for electricity generated using imported LNG.

On the other hand, the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has issued directives prohibiting load shedding of more than two hours, in line with instructions from the federal government and the Ministry of Energy.

In compliance with directives issued by the federal government and the Ministry of Energy’s Power Division, IESCO Chief Executive Officer Chaudhry Khalid Mahmood ordered the cancellation of all approved system maintenance shutdowns across the region. He further directed that, in the event of a supply-demand gap, load management in any area must not exceed two hours.

According to an IESCO spokesperson, Chief Engineer (Operations) Zahid Saleem Usmani has been designated as the focal person to ensure an uninterrupted power supply and coordinate responses to any emergencies.

The spokesperson said Chaudhry Khalid Mahmood had instructed all field formations to ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity to consumers and the prompt resolution of all electricity-related complaints.
