India, West Indies in ‘do-or-die’ clash on March 1

The Indian cricket team will play its final and most crucial match of the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 against the West Indies on March 1 at the historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

This match is being described as a ‘do-or-die’ encounter for both teams, as the winner will advance to the semi-finals while the loser’s campaign could come to an end.

For India, this is not just another group-stage fixture but also an opportunity to restore pride and settle old scores. Despite being the hosts, Team India is not taking the West Indies lightly, as a historic defeat 10 years ago still lingers in the memories of Indian fans and players.

Both teams have experienced fluctuating performances in the Super 8 stage. The West Indies remained unbeaten in the group stage and posed a tough challenge to their opponents with aggressive batting. However, they suffered a one-sided nine-wicket defeat against South Africa on Thursday. Earlier, they had begun strongly with a win over Zimbabwe.

On the other hand, India bounced back impressively after losing to South Africa in their first Super 8 match. They kept their semi-final hopes alive with a commanding 72-run victory over Zimbabwe. All eyes are now on the crucial March 1 clash, which is being viewed as a virtual quarter-final.

India’s cautious approach is largely influenced by the painful memory of the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final, when the West Indies defeated the hosts and shattered their title hopes. In that memorable match, played on March 31, 2016, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India, led by then-captain MS Dhoni, India posted a formidable total.

Sunil Gavaskar issues stern warning to Indian cricket team

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has issued a stern warning to the Indian cricket team ahead of their crucial Super 8 match against the West Indies cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

India’s impressive 72-run victory over the Zimbabwe cricket team has certainly lifted team morale, but Gavaskar emphasised that the Men in Blue cannot afford to underestimate the West Indies, who are two-time T20 World Cup champions.

Gavaskar highlighted the importance of a clear strategy to counter the West Indies’ aggressive batting lineup. “India must develop the right plan to neutralise the West Indies batsmen if they want to reach the semi-finals,” he said.

He also warned against repeating mistakes from India’s earlier Super 8 defeat against the South African cricket team. The West Indies have top performers who can change a game in a matter of overs. India will need to play smart and execute their plans perfectly,” Gavaskar added.
