India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to take up an urgent plea seeking action over police brutality against student protesters during the July 20 “Chalo Sansad” demonstration organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in New Delhi.
A lawyer urged the Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, to initiate suo motu proceedings over the alleged police crackdown, claiming there was videographic evidence of excessive force used against the protesters.
The counsel told the court that thousands of students had gathered at Jantar Mantar to demand fair entrance examinations, reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA), and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination paper leaks.
“The protest is already going on in Jantar Mantar. The police are already taking brutal actions,” the lawyer submitted before the Bench.
However, Chief Justice Surya Kant declined to examine the videos and refused to entertain the plea, telling the lawyer, “Don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time.”
The lawyer continued to argue that the protest involved issues affecting lakhs of students across the country, including demands for transparent NEET examinations and the dissolution of the NTA.
He maintained that students were seeking free and fair conduct of entrance examinations and accountability over the alleged paper leak controversy, but the court declined to grant an urgent hearing on the matter.
It is important to mention here that the Starical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a movement led by the youth of India started its online campaign against the Modi government, particularly demanding the resignation of India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the paper leak of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
NEET is a highly competitive exam in India to get admission in the medical fields, including MBBS and BDS.
The head of CJP, a student leader, Abhijeet Dipke, started an online campaign against the Modi government and the education minister of India for not providing justice to Indian youth.
