Internet Cable Issue in Pakistan Not Resolved Yet, Says IT Minister

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan has admitted that the internet cable fault in the country has not been completely resolved yet.

According to media reports, in the meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom, the Secretary IT said that the fault in the internet cable has not been completely resolved yet, the work is ongoing by the consortium, Pakistan’s internet traffic has been diverted to alternative routes.

In the meeting, Shaza Fatima said that ‘network problems are being faced due to spectrum shortage and legal disputes, the country is currently operating on 274 MHz spectrum, which is insufficient and the government is trying to hold a spectrum auction by next December or January’, later the committee summoned PTA officials in the next meeting on the poor situation of mobile signals across the country.

It has been reported that a detailed briefing was also given on the Islamabad IT Park project in the meeting and during the meeting, the project director informed the committee that 80 percent of the work on the project has been completed. Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima said that this project is being completed with the cooperation of a Korean company, but due to the delay in the project, the Prime Minister has ordered an inquiry.

PTCL Statement

A few days ago, Pakistan Telecommunication Limited (PTCL) had said that the International Cable Consortium has completed the repair of a repeater installed in the submarine cable, due to which the speed of the internet across the country was being affected.

To remove the fault in one of the company’s submarine cables, a repair work was planned, which was carried out under the International Cable Consortium, as a result of which the repair process started at 11 am on October 14 and was successfully completed, while the speed and connectivity of the internet service across the country was restored.

It is being reported that the state-owned PTCL manages 3 submarine fiber optic cable networks that provide international internet connectivity to Pakistan. The total 6 submarine cable systems providing internet to the country include three systems of PTCL, two of Trans World Associates (Pvt) Ltd and a cable of Cyber Internet Services.

The total capacity of these submarine cable systems is 13 terabits per second, with national usage between 7 and 8 terabits per second.
