Apple may not be planning a bigger screen for the iPhone 18 series, but early signs suggest the next flagship could still feel like a meaningful upgrade. Recent leaks point to several design and hardware changes that could make the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max stand out, even without a jump in display size.
One of the most noticeable updates could be a smaller Dynamic Island. Reports suggest Apple is moving Face ID components under the display, allowing the cutout to shrink further. If this happens, it would mark Apple’s smallest display interruption in years. While the screen size may stay the same, a reduced Dynamic Island could make videos, games, and everyday scrolling feel cleaner and more immersive.
Design tweaks are also expected on the back. Apple’s recent two tone finish has divided opinion, and the company appears ready to rethink that approach. Leaks indicate Apple may blend the aluminium frame and glass back into a more unified colour, creating a smoother and more consistent look. This subtle change could make the phone feel more refined in the hand.
Colour options may also see a refresh. Rumours suggest Apple is testing Coffee Brown, Purple, and Burgundy shades for the iPhone 18 Pro models. While final choices are not confirmed, the stronger colours introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro reportedly performed well, which may encourage Apple to continue with bolder finishes.
Under the hood, performance is expected to take a major step forward. The iPhone 18 Pro is tipped to feature the A20 Pro chip, built using a 2nm process and a new packaging method known as WMCM. Together, these changes are expected to deliver stronger performance, better power efficiency, and improved support for on-device AI features.
Camera upgrades remain a key focus. The standout rumour is a variable aperture main camera, which would give users more control over depth of field. This would allow for softer background blur when needed, or sharper detail across the entire frame, depending on the scene.
Battery life could improve further as well. Leakers suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max may be slightly thicker and heavier to make room for a larger battery. While details on the smaller Pro model are unclear, past trends suggest both Pro variants could benefit from battery upgrades.
Other refinements include a simpler Camera Control button, following mixed feedback on the current version, and a new C2 modem. Apple’s in-house modems have already shown gains in efficiency, and the next version is expected to build on that progress.
