Apple may not launch standard iPhone 18 this year

iPhone 18 may not launch in 2026

Apple is expected to break with a long-running tradition by skipping the launch of a standard iPhone model this year, according to a growing number of reports.

The company is reportedly planning a major change to its iPhone release cycle, which could see the iPhone 18 delayed until the spring of 2027. If that happens, Apple would not release a new non Pro iPhone in 2026, something it has never done before.

The move comes despite strong sales of the iPhone 17, which launched in 2025. Under the reported plan, that device would remain Apple’s latest standard iPhone for more than 18 months.

For over a decade, Apple has unveiled its full iPhone line up every September. That familiar pattern now appears set to change. Industry watchers say Apple is preparing to split future iPhone launches across different times of the year.

Higher end models are expected to take priority in the autumn, while more affordable or standard versions would arrive months later.

If the reports are accurate, Apple will launch the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in the autumn of 2026. The company is also expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone during that same period. The standard iPhone 18, however, would not appear until spring 2027, alongside models such as the iPhone 18e and the iPhone Air 2.

A growing and crowded line up is believed to be behind the shift. Apple has already added new options in recent years, including the iPhone 16e and the iPhone Air. Older models also stay on sale for longer. By the end of 2026, Apple could have as many as eight different iPhone models available at the same time.

Spreading launches across the year would give each model more attention and reduce competition between Apple’s own devices.

Supply chain experts say there are practical reasons too. Staggered releases could ease pressure on factories, help manage parts used in advanced features, and smooth Apple’s revenue across the year rather than relying heavily on one launch season.
