Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 is shaping up to be a device of mixed changes, with early reports pointing to both cost-cutting steps and notable performance upgrades.
According to recent leaks, Apple may reduce costs in certain areas by reusing older components. One reported change suggests the company could bring back a display material first used in the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022. If true, this would help Apple manage production costs at a time when smartphone manufacturing is becoming more expensive.
However, the device is also expected to bring meaningful improvements, especially in performance. One of the biggest upgrades could be in memory. The iPhone 18 is now tipped to feature 12GB of RAM, a clear jump from the 8GB found in the previous model.
This increase comes at a time when the global supply of RAM is under pressure. Demand from AI data centres has taken up a large share of production capacity, pushing prices higher across the industry.
Despite these constraints, Apple appears to be pushing ahead with stronger hardware. The iPhone 18 is expected to run on the company’s upcoming A20 chip, which will reportedly be manufactured by TSMC using a 2nm process.
This next-generation technology is said to offer around 15 percent better performance compared to the current 3nm chips, while maintaining similar power efficiency. That means faster speeds without a major hit to battery life.
Earlier rumours had already pointed to a possible RAM upgrade, but the decision was not confirmed at the time. The latest reports suggest the 12GB configuration may now be more likely, although Apple has not made anything official yet. Plans could still change as development continues.
The iPhone 18 is expected to launch next spring. With several months still to go before its release, more leaks and reports are likely to emerge, and some details may shift before Apple finalises the device.
For now, the picture forming is of a phone that balances cost control with stronger core performance, rather than a straightforward year-on-year upgrade.
