A massive fire broke out in Saudi Arabia’s key industrial hub of Jubail Industrial City after strikes by Iran, causing explosions at one of the world’s largest petrochemical complexes.
According to details, the escalation comes at a sensitive time when diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate tensions, making the timing of the strike particularly important.
Analysts have also said that the targeted site was a major industrial complex rather than a military installation, raising questions about the intent behind the attack and the potential for wider regional conflict, including Saudi Arabia.
Located along the coast of the Persian Gulf, Jubail Industrial City serves as a vital pillar of the global petrochemical industry, contributing an estimated 6–8% of worldwide production.
Spread across more than 1,000 square kilometres, the zone houses an extensive network of refineries and chemical plants that play a crucial role in global energy and manufacturing supply chains.
Key stakeholders include SABIC, one of the region’s largest petrochemical producers with strong international investment links. The industrial hub also hosts major joint ventures such as the Sadara complex, developed in partnership with Dow Chemical, and the Amiral project, a collaboration between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies.
Earlier, Iran and the United States received a proposal to end ongoing hostilities, with the plan potentially coming into effect on Monday and allowing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.
According to Reuters, Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, remained in continuous contact overnight with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi to advance negotiations.
The framework, reportedly prepared by Pakistan, was shared overnight with both Tehran and Washington. It outlines a two-phase approach beginning with an immediate ceasefire, followed by negotiations toward a comprehensive and lasting agreement.
